PATCHOLOGY SMARTMUD - NO MESS MUD MASKS?
You all know that I love a good mud mask - but the thing I tend to appreciate most in a face mask is the lack of mess (read: I can apply it in bed with the least drama possible). So, when Patchology offered to send me their Smartmud Mud Mask I was intrigued to see whether it was really possible to have a mud mask without all the drama of looking like you've been at the chocolate icing for a few hours. I selflessly took one for the team last week and put it to the test.
Now, I have to start with the price because this really is pretty steep at $30 for a one use mask. I know, I know, we all know that good skincare tends to come at a price - but I tend to reserve that line of thought for things that will last me a solid few months as opposed to something that will be on my face for a grand total of ten minutes. In it's essence, this is a sheet mask that's infused with mud as opposed to serum as you'd get in a traditional sheet mask.
I didn't really know what to expect from this because, truthfully? A mud sheet mask seems every bit as messy as a regular mud mask, surely? But, that's just my opinion. When you open this, it's essentially a sheet mask between two sheets of plastic - the instructions say peel one side, apply to face and then peel the backing - but I found this peel, apply, peel method to be completely ineffective and it was just taking the actual mask off of my face, and so instead I peeled both sides and then applied the mask to my face. This did work, but it bunched up and rolled a little weirdly in places and so it felt a little odd on my face, but it wasn't the end of the world.
I have to say that I do like that the top and the bottom of this mask are packaged separately in this, because it makes it considerably easier to apply than a full face sheet mask. When you're applying this, a little bit does tend to come off on your hands, but on the whole I do have to agree that overall, this is a lot cleaner than a traditional mud mask. It's good, but it it worth $30? In my opinion, no - I'd much rather just buy a mud mask that I can use a couple of times for a third of the price, and then just take the time to wash my hands to be honest.
All in all, Patchology have some great products, and ones that are easily worth the money, but personally I just wouldn't say that Smartmud is one of them. It's not a bad product, but unless you've got cash to splash, stick to your usual mud mask.
