SF Gate: I tried TikTok's favorite under-eye mask

Flashpatch rejuvenating eye mask and under eye gels

Beauty TikTok is chock-full of “get ready with me” videos of mirror-facing morning routiners applying layers of serums and makeup to their faces like canvases. And while I can appreciate the precision and satisfaction of a perfectly placed bronzer smudge, I’m really here for the behind-the-scenes beauty tricks that prime your skin for those layers of paint (or light coverage).

Patchology’s Rejuvenating Eye Gels are one non-makeup beauty product that keeps popping up on my social media "For You" rollercoaster, and it’s hard to ignore the fans gushing about the eye masks’ de-puffing and soothing properties. As a very puffy person myself, I had to give them a try.

What are Patchology Eye Gels?

The patches are translucent jelly-like, teardrop-shaped blobs that adhere to the delicate skin under your eyes. They can be worn two ways, either with the wide end toward your nose or up by your crow’s feet, depending on the shape of your face and your areas of concern.

You can wear the patches for as little as five minutes and as long as overnight. After peeling them off, simply pat any residual serum into your skin and you’re good to go.

What are the ingredients?

The patches come in a small tub and are soaked in a mixture of ingredients that which yield the following benefits, according to Patchology:

  • Caffeine to improve blood circulation and reduce puffiness by flushing out sodium that can cause bloating.
  • Hyaluronate, a compound that traps moisture inside the skin.
  • Centella Asiatica, which is anti-inflammatory.
  • Collagen, a natural ingredient that can improve skin elasticity and tone.

Together, the goal of these ingredients is to improve skin brightness, tightness, and smoothness during and after wearing the patches.

Do Patchology Eye Gels work?

I tend to be puffiest in the morning after waking up, so I tested the patches first thing upon wakening. They’re supposed to be applied to clean, dry skin. Immediately after applying the patches, I felt a sense of cooling and refreshment.

At first, I wore them for just five minutes, then tossed them and patted the remaining serum into my skin. I can’t say that five minutes significantly reduced my morning puffiness, but the patches did feel good and the serum helped to tighten up my skin for the rest of the day.

In subsequent trials, I wore the patches for anywhere from 10 minutes to overnight. I did have trouble keeping them in place overnight and had to search for them in my bed in the morning, however.

But longer wear did produce better results. I noticed that the patches helped lighten dark circles and reduce under-eye bags, especially if worn consistently. I like starting my day with them, so I can get the benefits of the serum for the rest of the day.

Are Patchology Eye Gels worth it?

While I’ve yet to find a product that offers a complete solution to persistent morning puffiness and under-eye bags, these eye gels from Patchology do help things. I find that they’re especially great for travel, as you can pop the patches on at the beginning of a flight and do your part to temper any puffiness during transit.

They feel great, and with longer wear and regular use, you may notice results as I did.
