Why Is Everyone Talking About Jade Rollers?

It seems like there’s a new beauty trend around every corner, and the jade rolling obsession is no exception. While the benefits of facial massage are fairly new to us, it’s been used for centuries in Chinese culture to stimulate lymphatic drainage and toxin release. If you’re looking to learn more about the popular skincare tool or you’re just hearing about it, we’re laying out all the whats, whys and hows for you below.

The Benefits

Sure, rolling a smooth stone over your face feels glorious, but does it actually do anything for your complexion? You bet. Using a facial roller encourages drainage of the lymphatic system to help release toxins that may cause skin conditions. It also helps to brighten your complexion and fade dark circles by boosting circulation and blood flow for a lit-from-within glow. And it even depuffs, tones, and tightens your facial muscles for a more lifted, sculpted appearance (without actually contouring with makeup). Use a facial roller a few times a week, and you’ll also notice a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All these benefits in a few, blissful minutes? Sign us up.

What to Look For

There are tons of facial rollers on the market, but you really can’t go wrong with a jade roller or rose quartz roller. In traditional Eastern culture, Jade is associated with protection against negative energy and balancing your chi, or your body’s energy. If you suffer from physical or mental symptoms from anxiety or fatigue, this might be a good stone for you. On the other hand, rose quartz is commonly referred to as the “love stone,” because it helps to increase self-love, ease tension, and ward off negative emotions. If you’re using your roller mainly for a self-care ritual and a little “me” time, this stone is a great option for you.

How to Use It

Now that you know what it does, it’s time to learn exactly how to use it. With light pressure (you don’t want to forcefully press it into your skin), begin by smoothing over the bottom half of your face, then work your way up. You’ll want to keep gently moving the roller in upward motions—from the midline of your face outward—on both sides. Pick the tool up after you get to the hairline and replace at the midline, repeating the same outward motion a few times. You don’t want to drag back and forth, because you’re trying to push toxins outward. It may seem complicated at first, but you’ll master it quickly.

  1. Start at the chin and roll horizontally out to the hairline.
  2. Roll from the corner of the nose, over your cheekbone, and out towards the ear.
  3. Flip the roller and place the small end near the inner corner of your eye, then roll over your undereye area out toward your temple.
  4. Flip back to the larger side and roll the tool from the inner corner of your eyebrow out to your temple.
  5. Roll from your eyebrows up your forehead toward your hairline.
  6. Finish by rolling the middle of your forehead horizontally out towards your temple.

Repeat the whole process for the opposite side of your face. You’ll want to make each pass about three to five times—the whole process shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes.

How to Get More Bang for Your Buck

If you want to enhance the jade roller’s benefits, apply a FlashMasque sheet mask or a pair of FlashPatch Rejuvenating Eye Gels prior to use. Once you remove the mask, work the remaining serum into your skin with the roller. This will help the serum absorb, so you get the most out of your skincare routine.

To aid in further depuffing benefits, store your roller in the fridge. The cooling sensation of the stones will help to calm any inflammation (plus it just feels amazing).
